Anatoli Strahhov: A Virtuoso of Different Materials and Textures

Anatoli Strahhov (b. 1946) is a renowned artist and collector, known for his virtuoso ability to create impressions of different materials and textures. His works, which balance conservatism and experimentation, traditionalism and exoticism, expressive materiality and ephemeral boundaries, contain elusive textures and meanings that never fully reveal themselves. Strahhov studied at the Tshinvali Art School from 1963 to 1967 and at the Estonian SSR State Art Institute from 1971 to 1976. He lives and works in Tallinn and is a member of the Estonian Artists' Union and the Estonian Russian Artists' Association. He has been exhibiting in national and international exhibitions since 1975. His annual solo exhibitions have taken place in both Estonian and foreign galleries and exhibition halls. His works can be found in private collections in the USA, Finland, Italy, France, Japan, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, and Estonia. He has participated in more than 30 solo and group exhibitions.

Valdur Ohakas studied at Tallinn Primary School No. 21, Tallinn Progymnasium II, Tallinn Commercial School and Tallinn Evening Technical School. In 1942–1943 he studied at the Tallinn School of Fine and Applied Arts under Eerik Haamer and Johannes Greenberg. In 1943–1944 he was mobilized in the German army. In 1944–1948 he studied at the Tartu State Art Institute under Johannes Võerahansu and Elmar Kitse, but did not finish school, as in 1949 he was arrested together with a group of art students and sent to the Vorkuta prison camp in the Karaganda region of the Kazakh SSR. He was released from there in 1956.
He has been exhibiting since 1946, and has been a member of the Estonian Artists' Union since 1959.
Valdur Ohakas participated in the 1960s Estonian art renewal process and interacted closely with Ülo Sooster and many artists from Tartu and Tallinn. The peak of the artist's work was the 1960s–1970s, when romantic landscape visions were central to his diverse work.
