Karl Burman Junior: A Legacy of Art and Architecture

Karl Burman Junior (1914 – 2001) was a prominent figure in the world of art, hailing from a distinguished lineage of artists. His father, Karl Burman, was one of the most esteemed architects in Estonia, as well as a watercolorist. His uncle, Paul Burman, was a renowned impressionist landscape painter, highly appreciated for his depictions of animals and still lifes. Karl Burman Junior studied architecture in the second half of the 1930s at the Technical Department of the University of Tartu and the Tallinn Technical Institute. He received additional art instruction from his father, Karl Burman Senior, and his uncle, Paul Burman, later furthering his studies at the Moscow Art Institute. Karl Burman Junior is recognized in art history as one of the most striking watercolorists, with a deep understanding of the technical specifics of the medium. His architectural studies undoubtedly benefited him, as the precision required in architecture was reflected in the detailed and nuanced motifs of his paintings, in which he depicted cities and specific landscapes. However, his works never became dryly realistic; on the contrary, they were characteristically emotional for watercolor technique, requiring swift and skillful brush movements on paper.

Dobrovolsky, Dmitri (born 1968). Three sisters. (1997)

Vahtra Jaan (1882 – 1947). The Lake. (1929–1933s)

This exquisite watercolour piece titled "Vahtra Jaan (1882 – 1947). The Lake. (1929–1933s)" is the work of the celebrated artist Jaan Vahtra. Measuring 24.5 x 33.5 cm, the painting reflects Vahtra's mastery in both constructivist and cubist styles. A student at the Riga iArt School and later at the School of the Society for Promoting Arts in Petrograd, Vahtra's influences include his studies under V.Shukhayev and K.Petrov-Vodkin. The first chairman of the "Estonian Artists Group," he led the group until 1925 and his later works retained an analytic approach to form even after he abandoned the geometric style.
Sooster, Ülo (1924 – 1970). Naked Sitting. (1949)

Julo Sooster, an eminent figure in the world of art, embarked on his artistic journey at the Higher Art Courses between 1943-1944. He pursued further studies at the Tartu Art Institute from 1945 to 1944 under the guidance of E. Kits. 1944 was a tumultuous year for Sooster; he was arrested in November and subsequently incarcerated in a prison camp. Upon his release in 1956, he returned to Estonia. Later, Moscow became his home where he and his wife played host to the luminaries of the sixties - Yuri Sobolev-Нолев, Ilya Kabakov, Victor Pivovarov, and Ernst Unknown among others. Boris zhutovsky and Vladimir Yankilevsky stood out as his closest allies. His artworks have graced many cities, from Leipzig, Moscow, Prague to Cologne, Rome, Venice, and Washington.
