Timotheus Roman (1895 – 1983) was a renowned artist known for his unique style and contribution to the art world. His work, “Kolhoositar” (1972), is a fine example of his skill in Sulejoonistus, a technique involving intricate line drawings on paper. The piece measures 21 x 16 cm and is signed by the artist himself. Born in Harjumaa in 1895, Roman showed a keen interest in art from a young age, with his naturalistic drawings and painting attempts catching attention. He attended Pihkva Primary School from 1907-1910 and Pihkva Commercial School from 1910-1917. Despite working long hours in a factory, Roman managed to attend evening drawing classes at the Pallas Art School in 1921. He continued to practice drawing independently in his free time until 1928 when he re-enrolled at Pallas. Under the guidance of Voldemar Mellik, he honed his drawing skills and studied painting with Villem Ormisson and Nikolai Triik. He also familiarized himself with graphic techniques under the supervision of Prof. Ado Vabbe. In 1932, he continued his studies in sculpture under Prof. Anton Starkopf and graduated as Starkopf’s student in 1938. After graduation, Roman worked as a sculptor in Tartu and participated in all major art exhibitions in Tartu and Tallinn. His personal exhibition took place in Tartu in April 1959.
