Styck, Franz von (1863 – 1928). Portrait of Marie Stuck (1906)

600

This captivating etching, infused with the delicate touch of watercolor, portrays Marie Stuck, the artist’s daughter, in a moment of serene beauty. Crafted by Franz von Styck, it measures 20.1 x 14.8. A signature from the artist graces the lower left of the plate, while “Gravure Hanfstaengl” is inscribed on the lower right. At the center bottom, the words “Des Künstlers Tochter” – which translates to “The Artist’s Daughter” – stand as a testament to the intimate bond between the artist and the muse. Franz Von Stuck, a Munich native, wore many hats in his lifetime – from illustrator, founder of the Munich Sezession, symbolist artist, to professor at the Munich Academy, where he mentored greats like Klee, Albers, and Kandinsky. Among his architectural masterpieces stands the Villa Stuck Prinzregentenstrasse in Munich, which now operates as a museum. After a life of artistic contributions, Von Stuck took his final bow in 1928, resting beside his wife Mary in Waldfriedhof, Munich.
