Oil on plywood, the self-portrait of Valdur Okhakas, captures the essence of an era, painted during his training at either the Tallinn School of Fine and Applied Arts or the Tartu Art Institute between 1944-48. A leading figure in Estonian art during the 20th century, Ohakas's work resonates with history and his personal journey. His background, including time in a Siberian prison camp (1949-1956), and his association with the renowned Pallas school, form a vital part of his artistic identity. Despite a tragic fire in 1991 that destroyed many of his creations, Ohakas's love for drawing remained undiminished. Measuring 54 x 73 cm, it prominently features Pihelga's signature on the lower right as "A.Pihelga 68". Pihelga graduated from the State Art Industrial School in 1934 and was mentored by R. Nyman and A. Jansen. He further honed his skills in Helsinki between 1936 and 1939 under the guidance of W. Lonnberg. Agu Pihelga’s career spanned decades, teaching at the Estonian State Art Institute from 1946 to 1980. Elevated to the position of assistant professor in 1961, he was notably influenced by the impressionist style, often showcasing it in his landscape and cityscape paintings. Pihelga's remarkable works are housed in prestigious locations, including the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and the State Art Museum of Kyrghyzstan in Bishkek.
