Pilar Aleksander's "Still-life" (1970) is a captivating watercolor painting on paper, measuring 2 x 48 cm. Signed with "Pilar 70" on the lower left, this work embodies the essence of Aleksander's artistic style. Born into a military family and spending his childhood in Yugoslavia, Pilar eventually settled in Estonia in 1922. Known for his floral compositions, seascapes, and lyrical watercolors dedicated to nature, he worked for the “Eesti Siid” factory and studied under the renowned painter A.Kaigorodov. An active member of Estonian Arts Group in Jaroslavl, he was also awarded the title of an honorary artist of Estonia. Fuks, Margarethe was a renowned artist, born in 1921 in Leningrad. Her family moved to Estonia the same year. She completed her primary education in Tallinn in 1935 and graduated from the State School of Applied and Fine Arts in 1940, specializing in decorative painting. She furthered her studies at the J.Koorti State School of Applied Arts in 1940-41 and at the Tallinn School of Fine and Applied Arts in 1942-43 under N.Mei and E.Haamer. She worked in Sindi and in Tallinn at A. Mõttus's studio and at "Arsis" from 1944-83. She became a member of the Artists' Union in 1955. Fuks illustrated and designed numerous children's and youth books, textbooks, youth magazines, and newspapers. She also practiced poster art and painted cityscapes, still lifes, and portraits. In 1947, she designed the badge and breastplate for the first general song festival of the Estonian SSR, together with A.Hoidre. Her work is characterized by the use of gouache on paper, with dimensions of 28.2 x 45.9 cm. Each piece is signed and dated, with a publisher's text on the reverse confirming authorship.
