Valdur Ohakas: A Pioneer of Estonian Art

Valdur Ohakas (1925 – 1998) was a renowned Estonian artist, known for his rich use of brown tones, further enriched with greys and ochre tones. His "brown landscapes" were extremely popular in the 1980s and 90s, captivating audiences with their romantic sense of nature. Ohakas was a key figure in the Estonian art scene from the late 1950s, and his importance in the development of contemporary Estonian art and the renewal of painting has only been emphasized more in the last decade. His work, which incorporated elements of abstractionism, cubism, surrealism, and fauvism, gained increasing attention for its innovative form and unexpected turns. Rather than faithfully reflecting reality, Ohakas was more interested in experimenting with colors and forms and testing their interrelationships and transformations.
Pulst, August (1889 – 1977). Vase and book. (1945)

Watercolour painting "Vase and book" (1945) by August Pulst exemplifies his affinity for landscapes, flowers, and views of old town. This 38x43cm painting has an ethnographical touch and reflects Pulst's unique artistic approach, educated at Riga Art School and further enriched by his experience as a decorator in the theatre "Estonia" and his significant role in Estonian museums. Signed by the artist (A. Pulst 1945), it's a precious piece of art that brings an elegant and historical touch to any collection.

One portrait of G. Reindorff (1963) is in the Art Museum of Estonia, but the artist usually made several versions. Reindorff is one of the numerous Estonian cultural figures that Brzeska has portrayed.
Irina Brzeska (1909–1990) is the author of a unique collection of portraits. She painted famous people of her time as well as relatives, friends and acquaintances. Among those she captured were, for example, Arvo and Nora Pärt, singers Anna Hermann (see the cover of the 1977 album) and Georg Ots, writers Anastasia Tsvetaeva (Marina Tsvetaeva's younger sister) and Uno Laht, artists Andres Tolts and Evald Okas. sculptor Johan Raudsepp, ballerina Anna Ekston, theatre artist Eldor Renter, actors Laine Mesikäpp and Salme Reek and many others.
Irina Bržeska (Bržesskaya) (October 5, 1909 Kiev – August 4, 1990 Kuremäe) was a painter who lived in Tallinn.
Irina Bržeska received her art education in Moscow in 1927–1930. From 1933 she was a member of the Moscow Artists' Union and from 1952 of the Estonian Artists' Union. On her own initiative, she created many portraits of the Estonian creative intelligentsia, a small part of which is in the possession of the Estonian Literary Museum. Her last solo exhibition was held at the Art Salon in 1985. In 1991, a memorial exhibition of Brzeska was held there at the initiative of Olav Maran, after which the artist's daughter took most of her work with her to Moscow.

Watercolour on paper by Karl Burman Jr. (1914–2001), a celebrated watercolourist hailing from a distinguished family of artists in Estonia. Known for his distinctive watercolour technique, Burman Jr. dedicated his life to capturing evocative cityscapes, inspired by his enthusiastic interest in architecture. His architectural studies at the University of Tartu and the Tallinn Institute of Technology further fueled his passion, leading him to become one of the most prominent watercolourists from the 1950s to the 1990s. This 1947 masterpiece titled "In Shop" measures 37 x 40.5 cm, and is signed in the lower right by Karl Burman Junior. He received art education from his father, Karl Burman the Elder, and uncle Paul Burman, famous names in Estonian art, and continued his artistic journey at the Moscow Art Institute. Karl Burman the Younger played an instrumental role in organizing the Union of Estonian Artists in Yaroslavl in 1943.
