Born in Harjumaa in 1895, Roman showed artistic promise from a young age, with his nature-inspired drawings and painting attempts catching attention. He attended Pallas Art School in 1921, balancing his studies with a full-time factory job. Despite the demanding schedule, Roman continued to independently practice drawing in his free time. In 1928, he returned to Pallas, honing his drawing skills under Voldemar Mellik, and later studying painting and graphic techniques under Villem Ormisson, Nikolai Triik, and Ado Vabbe. He also studied sculpture under Anton Starkopf, eventually graduating as Starkopf’s student in 1938. Post-graduation, Roman continued to work as a sculptor in Tartu and participated in major art exhibitions in Tartu and Tallinn. His solo exhibition was held in Tartu in April 1959.
