Lembit Saarts (1924 -2016) was a renowned artist from Häädemeeste. This piece, dated 2.07.1958, is a typical representation of Saarts’ style – generalizing, bright, and airy. The artwork is made with colored pencil, pencil, and paper, measuring 19 x 24.3 cm. Saarts was a prominent painter from the Soosteri friendship circle in Tartu. He worked as an artist at the Tartu experimental repair factory from 1966 to 1984. Born in 1924 in Tartu County, Saarts studied at the Tartu Higher Courses of Visual Arts from 1942-44 and at the Tartu State Art Institute from 1944-48. He has been exhibiting since 1958, with personal exhibitions at the Tallinn Art Salon in 1971 and the Tartu Art Museum in 1974. A member of the KL since 1959, Saarts painted portraits, landscapes, and compositions, including non-figurative ones. This piece comes from the artist’s family collection.
