Oil on canvas, duplicated on a cardboard, this rare work by August Pulst exudes cultural value. Measuring 25.5 x 34.2 cm and signed lower left by A. Pulst, the painting was created during his training at Riga Art School (1911 – 1915). Mentored by renowned artists like V. Purvitis, V. Tillbergs, and B. Borchert, Pulst’s artistic journey also led him to work in the theatre “Estonia” and to contribute to Estonian folklore and museum establishment. Mainly dealing with landscapes, flowers, and views of old town, his works often exhibit an ethnographical touch. The painting “Rural landscape with a road” (1912) is a remarkable piece that showcases his unique approach.
