Watercolour on paper, this stunning piece by Natalie Mei, entitled “Sketch for a Costume” (1930s), measures 37 x 24.8 cm and is signed lower right by Kretschmar “Pidulik marss”. Natalie Mei, a renowned Estonian graphics and theatrical designer, was educated at “Pallas” Art School under N.Triik and worked at the “Estonia” Theatre. Her significant works include costume designs for operas such as “Romeo and Juliet”, “Boris Godunov”, “Princess Turandot”, “Carmen” and more. This sketch is part of her contribution to H.Kreushmars’ “Ceremonial March” and represents a unique piece of theatrical history.
