Watercolour and gouache on paper, this stunning artwork “Fish” (1949) by Valerian Loik depicts the artist’s passion for fishing. Measuring 33.5 x 40 cm, it is signed by Loik and dated 18.IV 49. Valerian Loik, a Professor at the Estonian State Art Institute since 1967, was a master of pictorial compositions, city views, and still lifes. This particular piece exemplifies his virtuosity in capturing the image of fish. He graduated from the Pallas Art School in 1935 and later improved his skills in Paris. Teaching at the State Art Institute from 1950 to 1976, his works can be found in numerous museum collections. The painting has participated in various exhibitions in Estonia, the Baltic States, Moscow, and all-Union exhibitions.
