Hugo Lepik’s watercolour masterpiece, “Small Houses in Mountains” (1950s), showcases his affinity for deep and vigorous coloring. This 33.5 x 46cm piece, marked by H.Lepik on the lower left, is a fine example of his portrayal of Estonian landscapes and pictures of Sweden and Norway. Lepik graduated from the State Industrial and Art School in 1929, and further honed his skills in Germany, Italy, Finland, and Canada. Emigrating to Sweden in 1944, Lepik gained fame for his superbly painted portraits, and his works have been exhibited in various cities around the world including Riga, Kaunas (1937), Antwerp, Rome, Budapest (1939), Stockholm (1946), Montreal (1951), and Sweden.
