Koch Ernö (1898 – 1970) was a renowned artist known for his unique style and diverse body of work. This piece, “Raagus puu” (1932), is a pencil on paper drawing measuring 37.2 x 25. Koch studied at the Hungarian Academy of Arts from 1917-1921 and furthered his studies at the Leipzig Academy of Graphic and Book Art. In 1926, he moved to Estonia and worked as a freelance artist in Tallinn. His work during this period primarily consisted of cityscapes and commissioned works, including several portfolios of the shale industry. In 1940, Koch fled Estonia for Hungary and then Bavaria. His post-war work varied, mainly consisting of landscapes and churches. After moving to the USA in 1949, Koch became a designer of church interiors, and his monumental stained glass windows can be found in churches in Chicago, San Francisco, New York, as well as in Mexico and Canada.
