Evald Okas: A Journey from Carpenter’s Son to Renowned Painter and Graphic Artist

Evald Okas (1915 – 2011) was a renowned painter and graphic artist born in Tallinn, Estonia. He was born into a carpenter’s family and pursued his passion for art from a young age. From 1931 to 1937, he studied at the State School of Arts and Crafts, graduating with a specialization in decorative painting. He continued his studies at the State Higher Art School from 1938 to 1941, graduating as a painter. In 1941, he was mobilized into the Red Army. He worked as a lecturer at the State School of Arts and Crafts in Tallinn from 1939 to 1940 and from 1944 at the University of Art. He has been a professor since 1954. His work, “Karala küla. Ofort” (1958), measures 36.2 x 67 cm and is signed EO 58 on the bottom left and E. Okas 1958 on the bottom right.
