Efraim Allsalu: A Prolific Estonian Artist

Efraim Allsalu (1929 – 2006) was a renowned artist who studied at the ENSV State Art Institute under J. Võerahansu from 1948-54. He worked as a lecturer at the Tartu Art School from 1954-60 and served as the chairman of the Artists’ Union Tartu branch from 1961-77. Allsalu has been participating in national and Tartu art exhibitions since 1956, and his works have been displayed at all-union exhibitions in Moscow and Estonian art exhibitions in brother republics (1972 in Czechoslovakia). In 1969, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the ENSV and participated in the Vilnius painting triennial. His most comprehensive overview of his work was given at a group exhibition (E. Allsalu, I. Malin, and K. Polli) in 1964 at the Tartu State Art Museum (a selection was introduced in 1965 in Vilnius and Kaunas). He had a personal exhibition at the Tartu State Art Museum in 1973 and at the Tallinn Art Salon in 1976.
