Avo Paistik: A Journey Through Art and Animation

Avo Paistik (1936 – 2013) was a renowned Estonian artist, known for his work in animation and painting. He graduated as a radio technician from Tallinn Polytechnic Institute and worked at the Hans Pöögelmanni named Electrical Factory. He also studied at the Tallinn Cultural University’s caricature studio, led by Heinz Valk. His first caricature was published in the magazine “Noorus” in 1968. From 1971, he worked at “Tallinnfilm”, initially in the sound department. He was then invited by Rein Raamat to the animation studio, where he was offered a director’s position. His debut film “Värvipliiatsid”(1973) was a success. Avo Paistik is considered one of the core authors of the studio, alongside Rein Raamat and Priit Pärn. His most famous animations are associated with the character Klaabu, who debuted in 1975 in the children’s magazine “Täheke”. He also pursued painting, with his colorful, imaginative paintings often compared to Joan Miró. In 1988, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR. He left the studio in 1990 and became a pastor.
