Arnold Alas (1911 – 1990) was a renowned artist known for his Sevani motif. His work, “Sevani motiv õhtul” (1958), is a stunning oil on canvas piece measuring 50 x 55 cm. Signed “A. Alas 58” on the bottom right, this piece is a testament to Alas’s mastery of color and light. Alas graduated from the State Art Industrial School in 1933, initially specializing in decorative painting. He later studied time and park design and taught the latter at ERKI. He also served as the head of the drawing department. Alas consistently exhibited his paintings, characterized by large color surfaces, precisely determined light-dark ratios despite a relatively sparse color selection. He is a representative of the Tallinn school in Estonian painting.
