The Artistic Journey of Hugo Lepik

Hugo Lepik (1905 - 2001) was a renowned painter and graphic artist. He successfully completed his studies in graphics and lithography at the State Art Industrial School in 1929, under the tutelage of G. Reindorff. In 1935, Lepik further honed his skills at the Higher School of Graphics in Berlin. From 1929, he began working as a lecturer at the State Art Industrial School, a position he held until 1940. During this period, Lepik also worked intensively in book graphics and contributed to various magazines. His works include cover designs and drawings for the magazine Sõdur (1929 and 1933), as well as cover designs for the magazines Kaitse Kodu! (1929) and Taluperenaine (1939). He also created beautiful vignettes for the magazine Varamu (1938), which were repeated from issue to issue. Lepik's style is characterized by its drawing accuracy and fine graphics, often depicting nature motifs. His title design for the 1938 second issue of the magazine Eesti Noorus consists of a regular antique script and an ethnographic floral ornament, typical of the era and school.
