Junghanns, Julius Paul (1878 – 1958). Plowman. (1930s)

This exquisite oil painting on plywood, measuring 14.8 x 23.4, showcases the impeccable talent of Julius Paul Junghanns. On its reverse, it's authentically signed as 'Prof. J. Junghanns'. Born in Vienna in 1876 and raised in Dresden, Junghanns was a prominent figure in the world of art. He began his formal education in 1895 as a lithographer, subsequently diving deep into the world of fine arts in Dresden and then Munich. His mentor, the renowned animalist painter Heinrich von Zügel, was instrumental in shaping his skills. By 1904, at just 28 years of age, he led the Animalist and Open-Air Painting department of the Dusseldorf Academy. Junghanns' works have been displayed in premier galleries, including the KODE Art Museums of Bergen. One of his notable works, 'Spring', was auctioned at Christie's Amsterdam for $8,052 in 2000. Junghanns continued to inspire and teach until his retirement in 1945, leaving behind a legacy when he passed away in 1958.

Priidu Aavik was born as the fifth child in a family of nine children of schoolteacher Eduard Aavik.
At the age of 17, she moved to Tallinn, where she worked and studied at Ants Laikmaa's studio school.
In 1934, Aavik entered the Pallas Art School (Tartu), where she studied under Nikolai Triik and Ado Vabbe until graduating in 1938. She then moved to Tallinn, where she established her own studio.
In 1938, she traveled to Paris to continue her studies, but was forced to return when the war broke out.
Upon returning to Estonia, he worked as the temporary acting director of the Tartu State Art Institute in 1944–1946, as the chairman of the board of the Estonian Soviet Artists' Union in 1945–1947, and as the chairman of the Tallinn Art Foundation in 1947–1948. In 1951–1953, he was the chief artist of the Estonian pavilion at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition and in 1954–1962, as the chief artist of the Estonian SSR National Economic Exhibition.
His work mainly includes history, landscape and environmental paintings (mostly on the themes of fishing life). He participated in a creative trip on a fishing trawler in 1942–1943 on the Norwegian Sea and in 1944–1945 on the Atlantic Ocean and in Nigeria. In the summer, he loved to paint the life and landscapes of coastal fishermen in Prangli. He began to participate in exhibitions starting from the Pallas Art College graduates' exhibition held in Tartu in 1938.
Priidu Aavik was married to Helmi Trei, the sister of artist Salome Trei.
Strahhov, Anatoli (s. 1946). Loduga lähedal I. (2023)

Artist: Anatoli Strahhov, a renowned artist who studied at Tshinvali Art School from 1963 to 1967 and at the Estonian SSR State Art Institute from 1971 to 1976. He currently lives and works in Tallinn. Strahhov is a member of the Estonian Artists' Union and the Estonian Russian Artists' Association. He has been exhibiting at national and international exhibitions since 1975. His annual solo exhibitions have been held in both Estonian and foreign galleries and exhibition halls. His works are in private collections in the USA, Finland, Italy, France, Japan, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, and Estonia. Strahhov's works, which skillfully create the impression of different materials and textures, balance conservatism and experiment, tradition and exoticism, expressive materiality and ephemeralness on a strange border, contain elusive textures and meanings, never fully opening. He has participated in more than 30 solo and group exhibitions. The artwork "Loduga lähedal I" is an oil and tempera on canvas, measuring 35 x 35 cm, and is signed by the artist.
