Valdur Ohakas: A Pioneer of Estonian Art

Valdur Ohakas (1925 – 1998) was a renowned Estonian artist, known for his rich use of brown tones, further enriched with greys and ochre tones. His "brown landscapes" were extremely popular in the 1980s and 90s, captivating audiences with their romantic sense of nature. Ohakas was a key figure in the Estonian art scene from the late 1950s, and his importance in the development of contemporary Estonian art and the renewal of painting has only been emphasized more in the last decade. His work, which incorporated elements of abstractionism, cubism, surrealism, and fauvism, gained increasing attention for its innovative form and unexpected turns. Rather than faithfully reflecting reality, Ohakas was more interested in experimenting with colors and forms and testing their interrelationships and transformations.

Lembit Saarts (1924 -2016) – “Suvine Vooremaa Motiiv”

Lembit Saarts (1924 -2016) was a renowned artist known for his unique, abstract, bright, and airy style of painting. Born in Tartumaa, he studied at the Tartu Higher Courses of Visual Arts from 1942-44 and at the Tartu State Art Institute from 1944-48. He has been exhibiting his work since 1958 and held personal exhibitions at the Tallinn Art Salon in 1971 and the Tartu Art Museum in 1974. He was a member of the KL from 1959 and painted portraits, landscapes, and compositions, including non-figurative ones. Saarts worked as an artist at the Tartu experimental repair factory from 1966 to 1984. This piece, "Suvine Vooremaa Motiiv" (Summer Vooremaa Motif), is a typical example of Saarts' style. It was created in 1980 and measures 22.5 x 32.4 cm. The work comes from the artist's family collection.

Educated at the prestigious "Pallas" Art School under N.Triik, Mei became the principal costume designer for major productions at the "Estonia" Theatre, including works like S.Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet", M.Musorgsky's "Boris Godunov", and more. Mei's influence extended beyond the theatre, with additional designs for Tallinn Drama Theatre and the Leningrad musical theatre. This piece, capturing an upper-left perspective, serves as a testament to Mei's artistic genius.
