This exquisite etching by Olev Soans, created on black paper, represents a unique phase in Estonian graphic art. Measuring 30 x 35.5 cm, the piece comes with the author’s autograph and a note that reads “Noorus 1961/62.” It was even reproduced in a magazine. A graduate of the State Art Institute of Estonia in 1951, Olev Soans became a senior lecturer in 1979 and a professor in 1987 at the same institution. Renowned for his contribution to Estonian graphic art during the 1950s, Soans began using etching techniques to create historical maps of Estonia since 1975. His remarkable works earned him the Kristian Raud prize in 1985. “The Sailing Ship” from the 1980s is a significant piece, reflecting the artistic vision and craftsmanship of Soans.
