This exquisite etching by renowned Estonian artist Olev Soans, entitled “Green Estonia (1982-87),” showcases one of the cultural and informative maps that became immensely popular during the 1980s in Estonia. Measuring 67 x 64 cm, this work beautifully manages to convey a rich tapestry of Estonian cultural history in an accessible manner. The lower left of the piece is marked with “Ofsett,” and Olev Soans’ signature is present at the lower center. Honored with the premium Kristjan Raud award in 1985, the artist’s creativity also extended to adding watercolor to some of his map series. Educated at the State Art Institute of Estonia, Soans went on to teach there, becoming a senior lecturer in 1979 and a professor in 1987. This piece, featuring a sea chart, stands out as one of his most beautiful maps.
