Piepenberg, Karin (1891 – 1970). Bear Head (1911)

An exquisite etching on paper titled “Bear Head” by renowned artist Karin Piepenberg, created in 1911. This artwork captures Piepenberg’s vivid impressions from her travels to Russia. The piece measures 35.7 x 49.5 cm and is marked in the lower right with “Karin Piepenberg I V 11.” Piepenberg studied painting and drawing under the famous academician Bruno Héroux between 1911-1913 in Leipzig. Her unique lithographs were published in a folder titled “Picturesque impressions of a trip to Russia” and included views of locations like Tallinn, Haapsalu, Paldiski, and Keila. This etching, part of a broader exploration, represents a significant chapter in art history, capturing a time before World War I when Piepenberg’s influence was blossoming.
