Vladimir Makarenko’s “Erotica” (1978) is an evocative etching on paper, presenting a compelling piece from the artist’s dynamic career. Measuring 17.2 x 18.3, and bearing the artist’s mark “Makar 78” on the lower right of the plate, “6/20 Makar” on the lower left, and “MV78” on the lower right, this artwork encapsulates the fervor of a unique era. Born in Novo-Pushkarevka, Makarenko studied at the Dnepropetrovsk art school, and later at the Higher School of Monumental Art in Leningrad. His style, referred to as “orphism” by art historian J.-C. Marcade, has been celebrated in exhibitions across Paris, Metz, Toronto, and other major cities. With a Silver Medal for artistic achievement from Paris, Makarenko’s legacy as a non-conformist artist continues to inspire.
