Avo Paistik graduated from Tallinn Polytechnic as a radio technician. He worked at the Hans Pöögelmann Electrical Engineering Factory. At the same time, he studied at the Tallinn University of Culture’s cartoon studio, supervised by Heinz Valk. In 1968, his first cartoon was published in the magazine “Noorus”. From 1971, he worked at “Tallinnfilm”, initially in the sound department. Then Rein Raamat invited him to the cartoon studio, where he was offered the position of director. His debut film “Värviliiasid” (1973) was already a hit. Avo Paistik is considered one of the studio’s core authors, alongside Rein Raamat and Priit Pärn. In collaboration with Priit Pärna, he made the cartoon “Pühapäev” (1977), and in collaboration with Rein Tammik – “Tolmuiimeja” (1978). Paistik’s best-known cartoons are related to the shape-shifting character Klaabu, born from a drop of water, who debuted in 1975 in the columns of the children’s magazine “Täheke” and about whom he made three films in 1978-81: “Klaabu”, “Klaabu, Nipi ja Tige Kala” and “Klaabu kosmoses”. The latter received the main prize at the Madrid Science Fiction Film Festival in 1981. Paistik’s “Hüpe” (1985) received the main prize at the Stuttgart Festival. He participated in the making of “Naksitrallide” (I – 1984, II – 1987, final version -1990) alongside Edgar Valter and Mäti Küti. In 1988, he was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist of the Estonian SSR. The last film was “Minek”. In 1990, Avo Paistik left the studio and became a pastor.
At the same time, he cultivated painting. His colorful, fantasy-filled paintings have been compared to Joan Miró. It can be said that surrealism wove a unique nest for itself in the “Tallinnfilm” cartoon studio. Those who love Paistik’s cartoons will probably also like his painting style.
