Avo Paistik (1936 – 2013) was a renowned Estonian artist, known for his work in animation and painting. He graduated as a radio technician from Tallinn Polytechnic Institute and worked at the Hans Pöögelmanni named Electrical Engineering Factory. Concurrently, he studied at the Tallinn Cultural University’s caricature studio, led by Heinz Valk. His first caricature was published in the magazine “Noorus” in 1968. From 1971, he worked at “Tallinnfilm”, initially in the sound department. He was then invited by Rein Raamat to the animation studio, where he was offered a director’s position. His debut film “Colored Pencils” (1973) was a success. Paistik is considered one of the core authors of the studio, alongside Rein Raamat and Priit Pärn. His most famous animations are associated with the character Klaabu, a shape-shifting character born from a water droplet. His last film was “Departure”. In 1990, Paistik left the studio and became a pastor. He also pursued painting, his colorful and imaginative paintings have been compared to Joan Miró. His painting “Riding Man with Flower” (1994) is an oil on cardboard, measuring 50 x 70 cm, signed ‘Avo 94’ on the bottom left.
