Avo Paistik (1936 – 2013) was a renowned Estonian artist, known for his vibrant and imaginative paintings. He graduated as a radio technician from Tallinn Polytechnic Institute and worked at the Hans Pöögelmanni named Electrical Factory. Alongside, he studied at the Tallinn Cultural University’s caricature studio, led by Heinz Valk. His first caricature was published in the magazine “Noorus” in 1968. From 1971, he worked at “Tallinnfilm”, initially in the sound department. He was then invited by Rein Raamat to the animation studio, where he was offered the position of director. His debut film “Colored Pencils” (1973) was a success. Paistik is considered one of the core authors of the studio, alongside Rein Raamat and Priit Pärn. His most famous animations are associated with the character Klaabu, who debuted in 1975 in the children’s magazine “Täheke”. His paintings, full of color and fantasy, have been compared to Joan Miró. It can be said that surrealism found a unique nest in the “Tallinnfilm” animation studio.
