The artist comes from a family of a Chernomorsky Fleet officer Nikolai Pilar von Pilhau and was born in Sevastopol. He spent his childhood in Yugoslavia and lived in Estonia since 1922. During the period of 1934-1938 he worked for the “Eesti Siid” factory and at the same time being a student of the famous painter A.Kaigorodov. During 1942-1944 he was an active member of Estonian Arts Group in Jaroslavl.
In 1969 A.Pilar was awarded the title of an honorary artist of Estonia. He was secretary of the Union of Estonian Artists from 1959 to 1961 and for the second time in 1969-1971.
Alexander Pilar gained popularity for his floral compositions, seascapes and lyrical watercolours devoted to nature.
