This striking linocut print on paper, titled “Viljandi Lake (1970)” is a masterpiece by Juhan Kangilaski, a prolific theater and painting artist, cartoonist, and graphic artist. Measuring 28.8 x 34 cm, it features the artist’s signature and the title “JK-70 Viljandi järv” in the lower left corner and the artist’s full name in the lower right. Kangilaski, brother of Ott Kangilaski, began his artistic journey studying graphics and painting at prestigious institutions like the School of Art and Design and Pallas. His body of work reflects an enduring national romanticism. After World War II, Kangilaski lived and worked in Tallinn, where he worked as an advertising artist and developed his unique style in linocut and posters. He also contributed significantly to the Estonian State Puppet Theater and illustrated several children’s books.
